For the person who shares the bed, the kitchen and the bad days.
Perimenopause affects more than one person in a house. Here’s a five-minute primer for partners: what’s going on, what tends to help at home, and what to skip.
- Plain words
- Sources included
- No email needed
Patience lasts longer when you know what you’re looking at.
The primer, in five minutes.
Six things worth knowing. Read them once, then ask her which ones fit.
- It’s real, and it’s common.Perimenopause is the years of change before periods stop, usually in the 40s. Sleep, temperature, mood, memory and energy can all shift, and it can last years.
- It isn’t about you, even when it lands on you.Irritability can arrive like weather. It’s information about how she’s doing, not a verdict on the relationship.
- Ask, don’t fix.“What would help tonight?” works better than a list of solutions, or a link to something to buy.
- Sleep is a shared project.A cooler room, separate covers, a fan on her side. Small changes count, and so does not taking it personally if she sleeps elsewhere for a while.
- Come to the appointment, if she wants.Someone who sees the day-to-day can help describe it. Let her lead.
- Look after yourself too.Talk to a friend, read up, take a walk. Support lasts longer when it’s supported.
About half of women in relationships say it’s had an effect.
In a 2026 survey, 52% of partnered women aged 38 to 50 said perimenopause had affected their relationship. Almost nothing is written for the person beside them.
The primer draws on UK menopause guidance from NICE and on what women say they need from the people around them. The full Partner Guide goes further: what helps, what really doesn’t, and how to talk about it without a fight.
